The Badger Favourite Things – Movies

favorite-things

I have been thinking about this for a while now. Listing things that make me happy, think, laugh or cry or all of those things. They are positives when my depression or anxiety gets the better of me. They mean something to mean on some level. They may reflect who I am as person in some way.

I also like making lists so I thought that this would be a good thing as well and I thought I would start with movies because this has gone through a bit of change of late.

For the longest time my favourite movie was The Usual Suspects, probably one of the best pieces of work by Bryan Singer and Kevin Spacey but this opinion has changed dramatically. Don’t get me wrong I still think that it is a great movie but I don’t think I could ever watch it again. Primarily because of the conduct of both Mr Singer and Spacey in recent years. I know it is kind of ridiculous that my opinion has changed because of the actions of the director and one member of the cast but I can’t help it. It is just the way that I feel.

So I am going to list my favourite movies. I doubt that any of them could be considered the greatest movie ever made and some of them probably have seriously bad reviews and it will probably be animation heavy because I like animation a lot. They will have every have something that made me feel something in some way or spoke to me on some level.

Also I know what my new favourite movie is and I am going to leave that one to last and if you have read any of my previous posts or have read any of my reviews on my other blog you might be able to work it out. All other movies in this list are not going to be in order and that will probably be what happens in most of these kind of posts I make. I will know what my all-time favourite is but everything else can swap and change.

This list will show I am very much a modern person as they are all released within the last 25 years and all bar two of them I saw in theatre and the only reason that didn’t see them in theatre was because of timing or I found the movie after the fact. Also these movies made the list because I have watched them multiple times and have yet to lose interest in them and remember them all fondly.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner Azkaban – Alphonso Cuaron (2004)

Since I am a huge Harry Potter fan I thought I should get my favourite movie of the series out first. Now I know this one is a little divisive as a lot of fans dislike this one but for some reason it is my favourite. It might not have stuck as true to the books as the first two did but it got the right ones and told the story and made it feel magical to me unlike some of the ones that follow, especially Goble of Fire, which by the way is my favourite book, though Azkaban is my second favourite.

The Upside of Anger – Mike Binder (2005)

Now this is one that might not be known all that well as it is small movie that probably didn’t get a lot of attention but probably should have. The story follows a middle aged woman, Terry Wolfmeyer (Joan Allen) and mother of four girls who believes that her husband has run off to Sweden with his secretary. She forms a relationship with her neighbour Denny (Kevin Costner) who is a retired baseball player and a fellow alcoholic. The movie has a strong female narrative with each of the female characters having a clearly defined and all the performances are great and believable.

Inside Out – Pete Doctor (2015)

The first of 3 animated movies and strangely enough the three that I have are all done in different production styles. Inside Out is the computer generated one from Pixar (naturally). This one made me cry but I think all three of my animation choices did, well that I can remember. It is a wonderful exploration of emotion inside the head of a preteen girl and how every emotion is important even sadness.

Just Like Heaven – Mark Waters (2005)

I have mentioned this movie in relation to the music and also because of Mark Ruffalo but it is also a favourite of mine and if it is on in my house I will always sit and watch it. It is a beautiful movie about love, loss and fate and it has and will always make me cry. The story surrounds two lonely people who are brought together in a very unusual way, one of them is in a coma and her spirit haunts the other.

The Avengers – Joss Whedon (2012)

Well I am a geek and this is the first of two super-hero themed movies that I have included in this list. I personally think this is the best out the Marvel movies and it is why it was on top of my Marvel Movie list post which admittedly I will need to update but will wait until after Infinity War Part 2 comes out and I have caught up as I have yet to see Ant-Man and the Wasp and will probably not see Captain Marvel in theatre as I am not interested and neither is the Eagle, though this opinion might change, there is time after all.

Wonder Woman – Patty Jenkins (2017)

If I was going to have a Marvel movie on the list I had to have a DC one and I was naturally going to go with Wonder Woman. It is the only movie on the list that I actually went to the cinema twice to see, opening weekend with the Eagle in Gold Class and again a couple of weeks later as a girl’s night with my mother and nieces. Though admittedly it does lag a little in the end with the revelation of who Ares is it is still my favourite of the DC movies so far. Try to beat it Aquaman!!

The Lion King – Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff (1994)

This is my favourite Disney animated movie and the most original of them all, though that is under debate I guess with some comparing it to Kimba the White Lion, which I can see as I remember watching Kimba as a kid. Being Disney Animation it has a wonderful soundtrack with music by Tim Rice, Elton John and Hans Zimmer.

Empire Records – Allan Moyle (1995)

Another movie with a wonderful soundtrack but then how could it not considering that the movie is set in a record store. It is a wonderful cast with a young Renee Zellweger, Liv Tyler, Anthony LaPaglia, Robin Tunney and my favourite Rory Cochrane. This is also one of the movies that I did not see in cinema and found it later on.

Dogma – Kevin Smith (1999)

I will happily admit that I am fan of Kevin Smith though admittedly it more for his personality and his podcasts than his actual directing ability, though his work with The Flash and Supergirl has been good. I think his early work is great and if I hadn’t chosen Dogma for this I would have gone with Chasing Amy. This movie is very funny and shouldn’t be taken seriously, but then I am not overly religious.

Drum roll please………………..

Your Name – Makoto Shinkai (2016)

Well is anyone really surprised that Your Name is now my favourite movie of all time. I have probably talked just as much about this movie as I have of Harry Potter or DC in posts in either of my blogs. Just about everything about this movie is perfect in my eyes. The visuals, the characterisation, the music. I actually have one of the songs in my head at the moment. I listen to the soundtrack most days and watch it at least once a week. This is the other movie I didn’t see in cinema but that was because of limited release, timing and I don’t think anyone would have come with me to see it.

I mentioned Chasing Amy and I guess you call that an honourable mention but I have one more that I debated about including in this list and that is another Mike Binder movie called Reign Over Me. Though it stars Adam Sandler it is one of his more serious turns and it a story of helping someone overcome great grief after the most horrible of tragedies.

Equal Opportunity Badger

Don’t knock it if you haven’t tried it. I have been told this many a time and have had it used as a weapon, of sorts, against me. Last year I was told that if I didn’t watch the movie Avatar my bf would not go and see Batman Vs Superman with me. He is sort of threatening it again but this time with Fate of the Furious and Wonder Woman but I think I can get around this one since I have not seen any of the Fast and Furious movies and since none of them are available to binge on Netflix or Stan here in Australia I can’t watch them. Well I guess I could buy the movies (yeah right) or borrow and I am pretty sure that the second maybe an option if his brother or bff owns them.

Well any who Fast and Furious is not what this post is about it is actually going to be about Spider-Man and another possible blackmail attempt by my bf though I am not sure what he is going to resist seeing with me, most likely Justice League at the end of the year due to his loathing of Ben Affleck. So I am going to into try to find a connection and possible liking for Spider-Man, like I did for Superman previously and am going to embark on watching/binging on the animated Spectacular Spider-Man over the weekend/week. Spider-Man, along with the Hulk, are his favourite superheroes and I have a sneaky suspicion that I will be forced to go and see Spider-Man: Homecoming when it comes to the theatres in the next couple of months.

Alas it is hard being a DC girl when you are surrounded by Marvel men.

*************

Well I watched the first season and had a discussion in relation to Spider-Man with my bf over the weekend while trying to convince him to go and see Lego: Batman which he refused to do saying that it was a wait til DVD movie, seriously thinking that I might torrent it, illegal as it is though I will buy it when it gets released. Our discussion in relation to Spidey was why he considered him his favourite. I can understand why too. As a young boy seeing someone that is also young doing amazing things and being a smart mouth to adults while doing these amazing things would be relatable.

Well any who back to the show. Still can’t see the appeal really but then I am not sure this is the best example that I can get of the character in this medium. The theme song was good and I like the way they indicated when he was using the Spidey-Sense but all round I couldn’t really connect with the characters or the stories being told. All the characters except maybe Gwen Stacey came across as rather self-serving and shallow. The animation was not the best rather blockish and lifeless for my taste though Marvel has not done animation well, with the exception of anything related to X-Men. That may change as they are now owned by Disney and this iteration was done before Disney bought them.

I do have the second season and will watch it as Venom was introduced in the last episode and I do like Venom, weird I know. I also have Spider-Man: The New Animated Series with Neil Patrick Harris voicing Peter Parker/Spider-Man and might give the Ultimate Spider-Man a go. I might also try live action with the Toby McGuire/Andrew Garfield movies though will probably think on this a little more as recommendation wise they are not really held in good esteem.

I will keep you posted though.

My DC binge has come to an end, sort of. I am still reading the comics but I have finished the animated series now and Animelab has finally released the last of the dubbed Fairy Tail so I am watching that instead, maybe twice depending on when I next see my niece who likes to watch the show as well. I also getting an urge to binge Glee but I blame my iPod for that. My anxiety is still playing up but I am doing PT sessions through work and am hoping that they will help with that.

The topic for this post is actually my dog which I mentioned in my first post. She is a Ruby Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Lady Ariel but she has tons of nicknames which I will go through later. My mother named her as my mother has a thing for naming our pets after Disney characters so she became Lady after the Cocker Spaniel from Lady and the Tramp and Ariel after the Little Mermaid. My mother owns a Ruby Dachshund named Winni-Pooh Schnitzel.

I bought Lady, though I was not there to pick her up. She was born in Gatton in December of 2012 but she and her litter brothers and sisters were moved to Gailes in late January due to flood waters due to Tropical Cyclone Oswald. I was in Bundaberg at the time helping with Community Recovery due to the same Cyclone. It had been a pretty bad day and the news of her purchase definitely brightened my day.

She was the biggest of the litter and is larger than most Cavies that we know of. We actually joke that she is a mutant. She is kindest natured and sweetest dog that we have ever owned. She is not a barker so is not a good guard dog. Actually we tend to think that if we ever get robbed she would probably let them and wants pats from them. We have Winni and my sister’s dog, Steve (yes, that is his name) for guard duty anyway.

She loves a good scratch and rub but it has to be when she wants it and she thinks she is royalty. I truly believe that she understands what we say and I have regular conversations with her. She is not much of an outdoors dog but loves a good walk and/or car ride. She hates other animals, other than the ones she knows and tolerates those that visit the house.

She loves food and especially a good bone. I believe that if she was human she would either be a chef or a food critic. She enjoys sleeping and snores like a trooper. Actually Snorlax (after the Pokemon) is actually one of her nicknames. Others are Ladybug, Buggy, Chewy (after Chewbacca because of her fur), Donatella, Princess (she loves bling of any kind) and lately I have been calling her Chook or Chooky but I have been calling all my nieces, nephews and dogs that lately and of course Hufflepup.

I am not just saying that either because I am a Hufflepuff. There is a sorting quiz available that lets you sort your pets. I actually sorted all three dogs and they all came up in different houses and all three houses actually suit them according to the description given. Lady is a Hufflepuff, Winni is a Gryffindor and Steve is a Slytherin.

She absolutely hates the heat and that is the reason why we have to get her groomed. She actually has two cooling mats to lie on when the weather heats up. She is strange in that likes having baths and going to the vet. She has made several trips to the vet. She has have her declaws removed and she dislocated her knee and had to have an operation to fix it. Luckily she is insured and so is Winni, who hates the vet and is not fond of baths.  She occasionally watches television and she is a DC fan like me but is more of a Superman fan than I am.

In my opinion there is not better dog than my Lady and I wouldn’t change her for the world.

Travel Badger

There is nothing I love more than flying so you could save that I love travelling. Unfortunately I have not really been on what I would call a proper holiday which involves flying in years. I was on a plane last year when I went to my cousins wedding in Melbourne but I really wouldn’t consider that a holiday as such.

That last holiday I went on would have been when I went to America with my mother 4 years ago. The trip was a spur of the moment trip and it also coincided with my birthday so I spent that particular birthday in Las Vegas. That was one of the best holidays I have ever had. It was only to Vegas and Anaheim but still it was a lot of fun because it just Mum and me and we were able to do what we want when we wanted to.

On that particular trip we saw two shows in Vegas the Cirque Du Soleil Beatles show Love and The Lion King, for the first time. We also went to shopping outlet and in Anaheim we went to Disneyland (duh!!) and we also took the ferry across to Catalina Island.

The holiday before that was once again to the US. It started off as a trip that I was going to take with my cousin but he pulled out on me and ended up being a trip by myself. It was a Contiki tour that started in Anaheim that went up to Vegas then through the Grand Canyon, New Mexico down to Texas, Memphis, New Orleans, Orlando, up through Savannah to Washington DC passing through Philly and finishing up in New York. The trip started at the beginning of December 2005 and finished on Christmas Day. I stayed on however in New York until after New Year because essentially that was the point of the trip New Year in New York. To this day New York is probably my most favourite place that I have ever visited though I did love Savannah and the Grand Canyon.

I did the Contiki tour because it seemed like the most logical thing for a single female to do as I would be others around my own age and you know safety in numbers and I was right in thinking that. I was however one of the few that was not really into the partying side of the tour the drinking and clubbing. I was there for the actual travel aspect of it. In someways I don’t really understand why anyone would consistently get blotto and then be expected to be up early the next morning to travel a several hundred miles with maybe a little stop over to do some kind of activity only to get blotto again and so the same thing the next day. I remember there were three English girls on the tour who would do this and I called them (in private) mermaids because I was sure they could drink underwater.

The purpose of this recollection is because my mother is going on a holiday herself this week and I am not going. She, my stepfather and two of my nieces are going to Hong Kong on Sunday. My stepfather had promised to take my nieces to Disney and since they my mother, who despite the fact that she was not the one to make the promise felt obligated to keep it, made the arrangements and paid for it. Since they could not afford to go to either of the US Disney’s, though my mother would love to go to Disneyworld, or the one in France they decided to go to the Hong Kong one as it not that expensive to go to and reasonably close as the youngest out of the two girls is rather impatient.

This of course leaves me home alone. Well not really alone as my boyfriend is staying the week and my crazy sister will be around as well. This of course is not really good my mental state. I am not on any medication at the moment and my insides are playing up big time. I have also essentially been put in charge and though I have accepted the responsibility I doubt that my sister is going to pay any attention to the decree or my authority as she doesn’t listen to anything that anyone says and if is listening she will take offense to it. Last night when she was reminded of this fact she stated again her age and that she feels like the she is prison despite the fact that she is free to go and do whatever she likes. She has also been put on notice and if she plays up in any way I have instructed to call the police which to be honest I would do gladly.
