Don’t knock it if you haven’t tried it. I have been told this many a time and have had it used as a weapon, of sorts, against me. Last year I was told that if I didn’t watch the movie Avatar my bf would not go and see Batman Vs Superman with me. He is sort of threatening it again but this time with Fate of the Furious and Wonder Woman but I think I can get around this one since I have not seen any of the Fast and Furious movies and since none of them are available to binge on Netflix or Stan here in Australia I can’t watch them. Well I guess I could buy the movies (yeah right) or borrow and I am pretty sure that the second maybe an option if his brother or bff owns them.
Well any who Fast and Furious is not what this post is about it is actually going to be about Spider-Man and another possible blackmail attempt by my bf though I am not sure what he is going to resist seeing with me, most likely Justice League at the end of the year due to his loathing of Ben Affleck. So I am going to into try to find a connection and possible liking for Spider-Man, like I did for Superman previously and am going to embark on watching/binging on the animated Spectacular Spider-Man over the weekend/week. Spider-Man, along with the Hulk, are his favourite superheroes and I have a sneaky suspicion that I will be forced to go and see Spider-Man: Homecoming when it comes to the theatres in the next couple of months.
Alas it is hard being a DC girl when you are surrounded by Marvel men.
Well I watched the first season and had a discussion in relation to Spider-Man with my bf over the weekend while trying to convince him to go and see Lego: Batman which he refused to do saying that it was a wait til DVD movie, seriously thinking that I might torrent it, illegal as it is though I will buy it when it gets released. Our discussion in relation to Spidey was why he considered him his favourite. I can understand why too. As a young boy seeing someone that is also young doing amazing things and being a smart mouth to adults while doing these amazing things would be relatable.
Well any who back to the show. Still can’t see the appeal really but then I am not sure this is the best example that I can get of the character in this medium. The theme song was good and I like the way they indicated when he was using the Spidey-Sense but all round I couldn’t really connect with the characters or the stories being told. All the characters except maybe Gwen Stacey came across as rather self-serving and shallow. The animation was not the best rather blockish and lifeless for my taste though Marvel has not done animation well, with the exception of anything related to X-Men. That may change as they are now owned by Disney and this iteration was done before Disney bought them.
I do have the second season and will watch it as Venom was introduced in the last episode and I do like Venom, weird I know. I also have Spider-Man: The New Animated Series with Neil Patrick Harris voicing Peter Parker/Spider-Man and might give the Ultimate Spider-Man a go. I might also try live action with the Toby McGuire/Andrew Garfield movies though will probably think on this a little more as recommendation wise they are not really held in good esteem.
I will keep you posted though.
For a proclaimed DC girl I seem to write more about Marvel then I do anything regarding Batman, Superman and any other characters from the DCU and here’s another one.
I went and saw Captain America: Civil War over the weekend. This is not a review post which will be happening on my review blog.
I went to see this movie with my niece and my mother who was admittedly a ring in because my BF pulled out the morning of and I had already booked the tickets. This is this third time my BF has done this to me. I first offered the tix to both my brothers but they both had commitments.
On the way home my niece, who is 14 turning 15, asked us who we liked best. My mother said Iron Man because she likes Robert Downey Jr. I, on the other hand, could not answer the question. I do like Robert Downey Jr as well and I have nothing against any of the actors playing the characters and that is the rub. I am rather ambivalent to the MCU.
I will give a bit of an example I was watching the first episode of the new season of Game of Thrones with my BF and this is going to be a bit of spoiler if you watch Game of Thrones and haven’t seen the first ep. At one point in the episode Sansa and Theon are escaping from Ramsay Bolton and Winterfell and come across an abandoned hut. Riders from Winterfell catch up and Theon tries to tell them that Sansa is not with him and had died along the way. The riders don’t believe Theon and attack and find Sansa when Brienne of Tarth and Podrick arrive and battle the riders. When Brienne showed up I got really excited despite the fact that I kind of knew that she would.
The point being is that I have never once gotten excited for a Marvel movie, well maybe a little for the Avengers, and I have never felt any great like for any of the characters as well, like I do for Batman, Flash, Supergirl, Wonder Woman and strangely Cyborg. Sure I enjoy them as a whole but I don’t get emotional about the relationship of Cap and Bucky like some fans do. I didn’t go crazy with the first sighting of Spiderman in the trailer.
Speaking of Spider-Man I thought that I would try to elaborate on my dislike of the character. I really don’t know why I don’t like him. I never read the comics and we never really got the cartoons here and if we did I never watched them, well I don’t recall watching them. I do remember watching the X-Men cartoons however. I just think that getting bit by a radio-active spider at a science exhibit is a little stupid. I never watched the Toby McGuire movies and only saw the end of the first Andrew Garfield one. I have since tried to watch one of the cartoon series and couldn’t get through the first episode but then I don’t really think much of the Marvel cartoons except maybe the X-Men ones which I really like.
Despite my issues with him I will say that I did enjoy him in this movie, maybe because they actually got an actor close to the characters actual age and his interaction with Iron Man was really good.

I have threatened in my previous posts that I will do a post on DC and my preferences to the characters from these comics opposed to those in Marvel. Today is that day I believe and this week I have the rare opportunity to be able to watch Arrow and the Flash TV shows live instead of waiting for the iTunes availability that usually comes on the Friday after the airing (The Flash airs on Wednesday and Arrow on Thursday here) but sometimes it can take up to the Sunday.
The reason I have this mighty ability this week is because of the fact that my stepfather is away and thus does not have control of the remote control. My sister has no care of what I watch in the evening and I am not going to care what my BF wants. Hell I might even be able to watch Supernatural live tonight instead of tomorrow when it appears on the station stream tomorrow. That will all depend on other factors like me being able to get a good version of Once Upon A Time (unfortunately I have to torrent this one as the station that has the rights to this show are not treating it’s Aussie fans well and has not even aired the 4th season of the show) and what time my BF will be getting home tonight as he is going to visit his brother after work.
Well back to DC and why there characters are more preferable to me than Marvel. To be honest I am really not sure why. I guess I feel more invested in the DC characters than the Marvel ones. I like the X-Men characters very much and I grew up watching X-Men cartoons and my brother used to read X-Men comics. I only really saw the Batman 1960’s TV and the movies from the 80’s and 90’s and Superman from the 80’s. I loved the early X-Men movies as well. It has only been in the last 5 to 10 years that I have really come to appreciate and love DC and in particular Batman and think that is partially because of Kevin Smith.
His love of Batman got me interested in Batman and the character somehow resonates with me. I just think that he is believable and that he could really be a real person unlike other Superheroes that we see. The same goes for Green Arrow in a sense. I think it is the morality of the DC heroes that I appreciate as I think in someone ways Marvel Heroes are a little more selfish. I am probably one of the few that absolutely can’t stand Spiderman and don’t actually see the appeal or the fuss that is made about the character.
I am not the biggest of Superman fans and I never watched Smallville (though my BF did and he wants me to watch it) but I did watch Lois and Clark (Dean Cain was/is hot!!). I am, however, enjoying the Supergirl show, another show I have to torrent because it is not available here yet and I probably won’t be able to watch live though I will buy it on iTunes if it becomes available. I really don’t get the hate levelled at Aquaman as I think he has more going for him in terms of powers than some others do and his Marvel equivalent is probably Thor and he doesn’t get the hate. I also loved the Justice League cartoon movie Throne of Atlantis and Jason Momoa looks awesome as Aquaman in the upcoming movie/s.
I haven’t seen all that much of him other than a couple of the DC cartoon movies released but I am really liking Cyborg as well, yes I know he is in Teen Titans but I haven’t seen a lot of that yet as it has not become available on iTunes, DVD or any of the streaming services, but his character in the movies is very good. I am also gaining a great liking to Wonder Woman as well and not just because she is a female superhero. I also like the Greek mythos behind her because I am part Greek myself and Greek myths has always interested me (Percy Jackson, anyone).
I think that I will it at that for now but I reserve the right to revisit and talk more of my love of Batman in particular and also DC villains and in particular Joker and Harley Quinn.
Song of the Day
In my last post I went I went through my weekend plans and what do you know none of what was planned actually happened. Admittedly it was not me that kyboshed the weekend plans it was the boyfriend. This is why I don’t like making plans as it is very rare that they are followed through. I guess I am a go with flow kind of badger.
Actually one of plans actually did come to fruition this weekend and that was watching Age of Ultron with my niece. I saw it the first time in Gold Class opening weekend with my boyfriend and neither of us could say that we liked the movie all that much. We both found a little bit muddled and I personally didn’t like the way they handled the Black Widow character.
I didn’t enjoyed it any better on a second viewing and as a first time watcher my niece didn’t like it either. She found it very confusing and didn’t think any of it made much sense which to be honest, it doesn’t. She did however like the character of Quicksilver and found Aaron Taylor-Johnson attractive.
I have made mention that I am more of a DC girl than a Marvel one but I have seen all the Marvel movies and this is the first one I have not really enjoyed, which is a shame because I did enjoy the first one quite a bit. Actually I am going to introduce something that I like to do and that is listing. This list is based primarily on the Marvel movies alone and does not include other movies that are based on Marvel property such as X-Men and Spiderman though admittedly Spiderman has re-entered the fold he will probably never been included in this because I refuse to watch Spiderman movies because I do not like the character. It will also not include Marvel TV properties but I think that is obvious. I will say though that Agents of Shield is kind of disappointing, Agent Carter took me a while to get into but was good and Daredevil was great and I am looking forward to Jessica Jones.
