The Badger Favourite Things – Movies

favorite-things

I have been thinking about this for a while now. Listing things that make me happy, think, laugh or cry or all of those things. They are positives when my depression or anxiety gets the better of me. They mean something to mean on some level. They may reflect who I am as person in some way.

I also like making lists so I thought that this would be a good thing as well and I thought I would start with movies because this has gone through a bit of change of late.

For the longest time my favourite movie was The Usual Suspects, probably one of the best pieces of work by Bryan Singer and Kevin Spacey but this opinion has changed dramatically. Don’t get me wrong I still think that it is a great movie but I don’t think I could ever watch it again. Primarily because of the conduct of both Mr Singer and Spacey in recent years. I know it is kind of ridiculous that my opinion has changed because of the actions of the director and one member of the cast but I can’t help it. It is just the way that I feel.

So I am going to list my favourite movies. I doubt that any of them could be considered the greatest movie ever made and some of them probably have seriously bad reviews and it will probably be animation heavy because I like animation a lot. They will have every have something that made me feel something in some way or spoke to me on some level.

Also I know what my new favourite movie is and I am going to leave that one to last and if you have read any of my previous posts or have read any of my reviews on my other blog you might be able to work it out. All other movies in this list are not going to be in order and that will probably be what happens in most of these kind of posts I make. I will know what my all-time favourite is but everything else can swap and change.

This list will show I am very much a modern person as they are all released within the last 25 years and all bar two of them I saw in theatre and the only reason that didn’t see them in theatre was because of timing or I found the movie after the fact. Also these movies made the list because I have watched them multiple times and have yet to lose interest in them and remember them all fondly.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner Azkaban – Alphonso Cuaron (2004)

Since I am a huge Harry Potter fan I thought I should get my favourite movie of the series out first. Now I know this one is a little divisive as a lot of fans dislike this one but for some reason it is my favourite. It might not have stuck as true to the books as the first two did but it got the right ones and told the story and made it feel magical to me unlike some of the ones that follow, especially Goble of Fire, which by the way is my favourite book, though Azkaban is my second favourite.

The Upside of Anger – Mike Binder (2005)

Now this is one that might not be known all that well as it is small movie that probably didn’t get a lot of attention but probably should have. The story follows a middle aged woman, Terry Wolfmeyer (Joan Allen) and mother of four girls who believes that her husband has run off to Sweden with his secretary. She forms a relationship with her neighbour Denny (Kevin Costner) who is a retired baseball player and a fellow alcoholic. The movie has a strong female narrative with each of the female characters having a clearly defined and all the performances are great and believable.

Inside Out – Pete Doctor (2015)

The first of 3 animated movies and strangely enough the three that I have are all done in different production styles. Inside Out is the computer generated one from Pixar (naturally). This one made me cry but I think all three of my animation choices did, well that I can remember. It is a wonderful exploration of emotion inside the head of a preteen girl and how every emotion is important even sadness.

Just Like Heaven – Mark Waters (2005)

I have mentioned this movie in relation to the music and also because of Mark Ruffalo but it is also a favourite of mine and if it is on in my house I will always sit and watch it. It is a beautiful movie about love, loss and fate and it has and will always make me cry. The story surrounds two lonely people who are brought together in a very unusual way, one of them is in a coma and her spirit haunts the other.

The Avengers – Joss Whedon (2012)

Well I am a geek and this is the first of two super-hero themed movies that I have included in this list. I personally think this is the best out the Marvel movies and it is why it was on top of my Marvel Movie list post which admittedly I will need to update but will wait until after Infinity War Part 2 comes out and I have caught up as I have yet to see Ant-Man and the Wasp and will probably not see Captain Marvel in theatre as I am not interested and neither is the Eagle, though this opinion might change, there is time after all.

Wonder Woman – Patty Jenkins (2017)

If I was going to have a Marvel movie on the list I had to have a DC one and I was naturally going to go with Wonder Woman. It is the only movie on the list that I actually went to the cinema twice to see, opening weekend with the Eagle in Gold Class and again a couple of weeks later as a girl’s night with my mother and nieces. Though admittedly it does lag a little in the end with the revelation of who Ares is it is still my favourite of the DC movies so far. Try to beat it Aquaman!!

The Lion King – Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff (1994)

This is my favourite Disney animated movie and the most original of them all, though that is under debate I guess with some comparing it to Kimba the White Lion, which I can see as I remember watching Kimba as a kid. Being Disney Animation it has a wonderful soundtrack with music by Tim Rice, Elton John and Hans Zimmer.

Empire Records – Allan Moyle (1995)

Another movie with a wonderful soundtrack but then how could it not considering that the movie is set in a record store. It is a wonderful cast with a young Renee Zellweger, Liv Tyler, Anthony LaPaglia, Robin Tunney and my favourite Rory Cochrane. This is also one of the movies that I did not see in cinema and found it later on.

Dogma – Kevin Smith (1999)

I will happily admit that I am fan of Kevin Smith though admittedly it more for his personality and his podcasts than his actual directing ability, though his work with The Flash and Supergirl has been good. I think his early work is great and if I hadn’t chosen Dogma for this I would have gone with Chasing Amy. This movie is very funny and shouldn’t be taken seriously, but then I am not overly religious.

Drum roll please………………..

Your Name – Makoto Shinkai (2016)

Well is anyone really surprised that Your Name is now my favourite movie of all time. I have probably talked just as much about this movie as I have of Harry Potter or DC in posts in either of my blogs. Just about everything about this movie is perfect in my eyes. The visuals, the characterisation, the music. I actually have one of the songs in my head at the moment. I listen to the soundtrack most days and watch it at least once a week. This is the other movie I didn’t see in cinema but that was because of limited release, timing and I don’t think anyone would have come with me to see it.

I mentioned Chasing Amy and I guess you call that an honourable mention but I have one more that I debated about including in this list and that is another Mike Binder movie called Reign Over Me. Though it stars Adam Sandler it is one of his more serious turns and it a story of helping someone overcome great grief after the most horrible of tragedies.

Badger Sounds

I mentioned in my recent review that for BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad that I usually don’t pay much attention to the music when I watch movies or TV, unless of course it is part of the plot of the movie or show is musical in nature. With anime, for some reason, I do pay attention. I don’t know why, maybe it is because the first anime that I really go into as an adult was Cowboy Bebop and music does play a part in it  and that in turn makes me pay attention whenever I watch anime whether it significant to the plot or not.

That is not to say that at time the score or a particular song played in a show does not grab my attention. I remember going to see The Talented Mr Ripley with a friend and though the movie was good it was music that caught my attention more than Jude Law or Matt Damon’s acting. It was the same with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban though I guess Harry is a little different than Mr Ripley as I am a big fan of the books and had seen the previous two movies. It was just something about the music that caught my attention this time and that hadn’t happened the first two times. Prisoner, by the way, is my favourite out the movies and probably my second favourite book.

Now I have already mentioned that I am already susceptible to music used in anime but I have to make mention of one particular anime that this really stood out to me. It is a movie called Your Name and the music was supplied by a Japanese rock/pop band called Radwimps. This is, in my opinion, an almost perfect movie with the story, animation and music all working together in tandem to make it so. I actually bought the soundtrack to this movie because I enjoyed the music so much and have used three of the songs from it as my Song of the Day (see below).

Now let move on from soundtracks as at times it is not the score but a song that will jump out at me as it elevates the scene in some way and makes you think or feel. Most recently that happened with me when I saw Deadpool 2. I guess I should give a spoiler warning here but near the end there is a sequence where Deadpool “dies” and is reunited with Vanessa, who had been killed at the beginning of the movie. While this is happening a-ha’s Take On Me is playing though it is an unplugged version of the song. Just the combination of what was happening and the song had me crying. It stuck with me so much so that I woke up with it in my head and I used that version of the song as my Song of the Day.

I found Amos Lee the same way when his song Colors was played during a scene near the end of the romantic comedy Just Like Heaven and to this day I still cry at the end of that movie because of that scene and that song. I have since bought just about all of his albums. Just Like Heaven also made me take more notice of Mark Ruffalo and the world is just so much better with him in it. This of course takes me back to the reason why I am writing this post as he is also the male lead of Begin Again and I have the song Lost Stars in my head for the last week or so. BTW I also own the soundtrack to that movie as well.

Song Of The Day

The Badger’s Earworm

stars

We have all had it happen to us as some point in time. You hear a song somewhere or maybe you wake up with in your head and it just sticks and won’t go away. It can get annoying especially if it is a song that you don’t particularly like. I once had Let It Go from Frozen in my head for a solid week and it is not a song that I like all that much, a like even less now.

Well anyway I’m in that position at the moment. For the last three days or so I have had the song Lost Stars by Adam Levine or Keira Knightley, which ever you prefer, from the movie Begin Again in my head. I woke up with it and it won’t leave. It’s rather odd because I have not watched the movie or even heard the song recently. It is also not a song that you hear regularly on the radio, actually I have never heard it on the radio.

It is times like these that I wonder if the world or whatever is trying to tell me something. I recently just finished watching the anime BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad and there are things in that speak to me. There are also some similarities between BECK and the movie Begin Again as they are both about music and finding your path/passion, whether it for the first time (BECK) or finding it again (Begin Again). Maybe it is a little serendipitous that I started watching this show and hearing that song. Maybe I have to find my path or return to it.

Maybe it is just my anxiety talking though. I do have a review tomorrow and I have also felt a little jumpy lately and my headaches and neck pain has also been playing up.

It is has been a while since I gave a wedding update so here goes. I have been forced to change the date due to money though it might end up screwing me over as the celebrant that had lined up for the original date may not be available for the new one and I really wanted this celebrant to marry us. Not just because he was offering his services for free but because I know him and he knows me and I would feel more comfortable being married by someone that I already consider to be a friend.

The new date, however, works well as my eldest niece who is one of the bridesmaids will be 18 which means she will be legal and able to drink.

Comic Books and the Badger

dccomicsipadspalsh

I have talked about comic books characters and my particular liking for DC comic book characters and I have touched on Marvel as well and might have to update my Marvel Movie list soon though I might have to wait until after Avenger’s: Infinity War part 1 comes out. I haven’t seen Black Panther yet either but neither myself or the Eagle are super eager to see it and will wait for the digital release for that.

I have however only really talked a little of my reading of comic books so I thought that I share my pull list and also talk about a podcast that I listen that deals with comic books and in particular DC books.

Okay so my current pull list is though I might have to cut it down as it is quite extensive and expensive for someone that is on a very strict budget and is trying to save for a wedding!!

Action Comics

Aquaman

Batman

Batman: White Knight*

Dark Nights Metal*

Detective Comics

Doomsday Clock*

The Flash

Green Arrow

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corp

Harley Quinn

Justice League

Mera Queen of Atlantis

Red Hood and the Outlaws

Super Sons

Titans

The Terrifics

Teen Titans

Trinity

Wonder Woman

  • Indicates Events or Miniseries

I would like to cut it down and depending on how Mera and the Terrifics go as there has only been one issue of each I might be able to do that and I believe that Super Sons is coming to an end as well. Admittedly I have dropped in and out of a few of them. I didn’t really like the writing at stages for Justice League and Harley Quinn for a while but picked it up again when the story or writer changed. I also dropped Action for a while due for my indifference to Superman but a story interested me so I got back on it. That arc has come to end however and I might drop it again.

The books I have dropped are:

Batgirl

Batgirl and the Birds of Prey

Batwoman

Cyborg

Green Lanterns

The Hellblazer

Justice League of America

New Superman *

Nightwing

Suicide Squad

Supergirl

Superman

  • Now titled New Superman and the Justice League of China

Some of them I believe have been cancelled but I gave up on them before then and the rest I gave up due to the writing being quite bad and/or couldn’t justify buying them. The only one that I gave up that I wish I didn’t have to was New Superman as the story was pretty good. I wish that I didn’t have to give up Green Lanterns as well because I love Jessica Cruz, I really can relate to her, but the story was really bad and I couldn’t justify it. She is in Justice League however so I do see her occasionally. I might also re-pick up Superman when Brian Michael Bendis comes on board but will wait and see what the reviews say.

Which leads into the comics podcast that I have been listening too but before I get into that I should say that I have dramatically culled my listening list. I now only have 7 podcasts that I listen to they are:

Legends of Tomorrow Podcast

The Flash podcast

Supergirl Radio

Hollywood Babble-On

Fatman of Batman

Lore

Weird Science DC Comics Podcast

thDL0TVKU4

It is the last one that I want to talk about however and it is in a way why I culled the list and also because I kind of lost interest in some of the others which pains me to say especially when it comes to the Mugglenet ones. I am thinking of dropping on the show ones but might wait till the end of the season.

Now Weird Science DC podcast naturally has a website to back it up though it is a review blog which was how the podcast got started. It’s hosts are Jim Werner and Eric Shea who are ‘friends’ and work colleagues. On the site they review all DC comics each week and then talk about them books in depth during the podcast along with various stories that happen involving their families and work colleagues which they refer to as nonsense. There are also segments provided by other contributors to the site and not all of them are DC related. They also read out all mail that they receive, I know this for a fact as I have emailed them twice and have heard them being read, and what they call a Rant and Rave line in which listeners can call in and, well, Rant and Rave about anything they like whether it be comic related or not. They are just as entertaining as the hosts.

All of this produces a podcast that can last up to 10+ hours, hence the cull of other podcasts that I listen to as theirs can take 2 maybe 3 days to listen to if I only listen going to and from work. I have been known to listen at work as well which can cause trouble as their nonsense can be quite funny and I am trying my hardest not to laugh. They look after their listeners well and call them the ‘Get Fresh Crew’ and have a private chat for them. I guess I could be called a member but I have never asked for the links to get involved and I not sure that I have to time to do so. I think the thing that I like the most is they are brutally honest. If they have a an issue with the story or art they will say so and not just give a good review just to get to be on the good side of DC.

A Badger’s Idea

6e970331d77a3bb0f07c464d283ab0b6-honey-badger-php

I have mentioned before that I like to do written roleplay and in particular Harry Potter roleplay. I was a member of a site for a many years that I eventually was a mod on before it was shut down and I have been in and out sites since even running my own for a while. I was a member of site at the end of last year beginning of this but sort of lost interest mainly because I believed that the site didn’t have balance, this I believe is my anxiety speaking, and since then I have done numerous searches for a new site to play on and have found that most sites have the same issue or there is an element in the plot that I don’t like or think is feasible even though in most cases it is an AU site.

They all seem to be weighted towards the dark side of the force, to borrow a Star Wars phrase, and it bothers me greatly. Look, I see the allure in playing the dark-wizard but if you give the them an extra power or just power all together you have to give the opposition an opposing power or something they can use to fight back. You can’t just have a site full of Death Eaters and no Order or Order like group to fight back with. It’s no fun trying to play a hero or just a neutral character when the scale is in heavily in favour of the dark or dark sympathetic, especially when you feel like you have to be secretive all the time.

So I have been trying to think of a plotline that I can start my own site with and I think I have it but I really need feedback on it and also assistance. I was trying to find a website when I can voice such a thing but had no luck and had put something up in OOC section of one of the sites that I am a member of but I have had no responses so I thought that I might put it up here and see if I get a nibble.

******

The missing 20.

It is a little known tale that came from the second war. One month after the death of Albus Dumbledore 20 persons with magic in their blood disappeared. Differing in age, from the age of 15 and up, blood-status, and sex vanished without a trace within a span of a day. All disappearances were reported to the Ministry but with He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named and his Death Eaters on the verge of taking of the Ministry of Magic the missing were soon forgotten and were assumed either dead or had left the country.

June 2017, 20 years later the 20 reappear. 10 appear in Glastonbury the other 10 in Seven Dials, London. They all appear to have not aged but are aware that they have.

**********

Now it is a work in progress as I want there to be a reason for their disappearance, but maybe that can be a part of the plot, and I also want them to have obtained something while they were away though I don’t necessarily want it to be the same thing though whatever it will be will either fall on the dark or light side. Where they arrived will define what side of the line are aligned with as I see Glastonbury as the light and Seven Dials as the dark though I guess this could change if a different location suits better.

So if there are any role players out there and think this a good idea and would like to assist I will be mighty grateful.

Badger Music

I have written about my fandom loves and sporting loves but never really gotten into my musical tastes and my background when it comes to music. I don’t think that there is a person alive that can honestly say that they do not like music of some kind.

I love music, always have. In high school I was in the school band and choir and attended the Sydney School Eisteddfods a couple of times in their choir section. I played the flute and sang a little though admittedly I was not the best of playing the flute mainly cause unlike most women I do have an issue of doing two things at once, that being playing and reading music at the same time. I guess also my anxiety would rear its head even then as I was never very good a singing solo either due to nerves.

I have attended a few concerts though probably not as many as I would like to. My first concert I ever saw I believe was Salt N’ Peppa and that was with my sister and her friend and it was more for my sister than for me even though the concert was in and around my birthday. The next concert was once again for my sister and that was Madonna, the very first time that she came out to Australia. My sister was a huge fan of Madonna back then.

All other concerts that I attended have been here in Brisbane and they are:

  • Coldplay (twice)
  • Dave Matthews Band (twice)
  • Snow Patrol
  • Counting Crows
  • Powderfinger (though not their farewell shows)
  • The Screaming Jets

I had always wanted to see U2 in concert but I have a feeling that I won’t ever go to another concert again due to my anxiety and the fact that I now have an issue with crowds and my bf does too. I would have like to have gone to a music festival but maybe I am a little too old now though maybe if there is a good line-up maybe the Byron Bay Blues and Roots festival might be a good one to attend.

Actually there probably one gig that I would probably try to attend if they ever come to Australia again and I will drag the bf with me if I have to and that is my favourite band at the moment and that is Florence and the Machine. Actually if Florence Welch came on her own and did solo shows I would go in heartbeat. I honestly believe that she is one of the best female singers in the world right now, probably second to Adele. There is just something about her that speaks to me and I have been saying lately that she is my spirit animal/idol. We also share the same birthday, so a fellow Virgo.

I have also gone to attended a few musicals and at one stage I tried to attend one a year with my mother, that is if there was a good show playing. I have seen:

  • The Lion King (twice, once in Las Vegas and once in Brisbane)
  • The Producers (Brisbane)
  • Wicked (Sydney)
  • Chicago (twice Broadway and Brisbane)
  • The Phantom of the Opera (Brisbane)
  • Rock of Ages (Brisbane)
  • Jesus Christ Superstar (Sydney)
  • Buddy (Sydney)
  • Singing in the Rain (Brisbane)

I think I have seen more than that but off the top of my head that is all I can remember. I have though been to a couple of cabaret shows one in Las Vegas while on a Contiki tour and again for a hen’s night a couple of years ago at a restaurant on the Gold Coast called Dracula’s. I have also attended a couple of Cirque Du Soleil shows

Equal Opportunity Badger

Don’t knock it if you haven’t tried it. I have been told this many a time and have had it used as a weapon, of sorts, against me. Last year I was told that if I didn’t watch the movie Avatar my bf would not go and see Batman Vs Superman with me. He is sort of threatening it again but this time with Fate of the Furious and Wonder Woman but I think I can get around this one since I have not seen any of the Fast and Furious movies and since none of them are available to binge on Netflix or Stan here in Australia I can’t watch them. Well I guess I could buy the movies (yeah right) or borrow and I am pretty sure that the second maybe an option if his brother or bff owns them.

Well any who Fast and Furious is not what this post is about it is actually going to be about Spider-Man and another possible blackmail attempt by my bf though I am not sure what he is going to resist seeing with me, most likely Justice League at the end of the year due to his loathing of Ben Affleck. So I am going to into try to find a connection and possible liking for Spider-Man, like I did for Superman previously and am going to embark on watching/binging on the animated Spectacular Spider-Man over the weekend/week. Spider-Man, along with the Hulk, are his favourite superheroes and I have a sneaky suspicion that I will be forced to go and see Spider-Man: Homecoming when it comes to the theatres in the next couple of months.

Alas it is hard being a DC girl when you are surrounded by Marvel men.

*************

Well I watched the first season and had a discussion in relation to Spider-Man with my bf over the weekend while trying to convince him to go and see Lego: Batman which he refused to do saying that it was a wait til DVD movie, seriously thinking that I might torrent it, illegal as it is though I will buy it when it gets released. Our discussion in relation to Spidey was why he considered him his favourite. I can understand why too. As a young boy seeing someone that is also young doing amazing things and being a smart mouth to adults while doing these amazing things would be relatable.

Well any who back to the show. Still can’t see the appeal really but then I am not sure this is the best example that I can get of the character in this medium. The theme song was good and I like the way they indicated when he was using the Spidey-Sense but all round I couldn’t really connect with the characters or the stories being told. All the characters except maybe Gwen Stacey came across as rather self-serving and shallow. The animation was not the best rather blockish and lifeless for my taste though Marvel has not done animation well, with the exception of anything related to X-Men. That may change as they are now owned by Disney and this iteration was done before Disney bought them.

I do have the second season and will watch it as Venom was introduced in the last episode and I do like Venom, weird I know. I also have Spider-Man: The New Animated Series with Neil Patrick Harris voicing Peter Parker/Spider-Man and might give the Ultimate Spider-Man a go. I might also try live action with the Toby McGuire/Andrew Garfield movies though will probably think on this a little more as recommendation wise they are not really held in good esteem.

I will keep you posted though.

A Badger’s Decision

Okay so my anxiety has gotten worse so much so that I had to leave and go home on Friday of last week because I just could not focus on anything. I had to explain the feeling to my boss because he has never had the feeling before. We broke it down to having approx 10 coffees in a short amount of time.

I have put it down to my medication as I had been given a generic form of my medication and it was making me wired. I went to get my normal medication but my chemist had stopped getting it and had only the one that using and another that was way more expensive. I am still taking the medication but I am making sure that I eat before taking it as the anxiety isn’t as bad if I eat first.

Since it has been two weeks since my birthday I have come to the conclusion that it probably wasn’t that entirely that is the source of my current lapse. I am thinking that is the decisions that I have made that might be a contributing factor. That being my decision to move in with my bf, sister and her bf and also to return to study. I have a real bad habit of making decisions on the spur of the moment and they figuring out the consequences later on. That last time this happened I had got together with my bf, decided to study and also agreed to go overseas. Two out of three were good decisions the third one I never finished.

Another decision I made was to get back into Harry Potter written role play. I have been wanting to for a while it was just trying to find the right site and I think I found it though it is not exactly what I was looking for. I have only played in and around the Voldemort/Harry timeline and up to 10-20 years after the books were set and also in a PG kind of atmosphere. This time around is set in 2053 and it definitely a Adults website so much so that they have included a comfortability form to complete.

The staff and members are really friendly and I joined using the son of a character that I have had for a while. The good thing with this site is that they don’t mind you having multiple characters and to a certain extent they even encourage it so in the future I might bring in other characters that I have created. I just have to work on how they fit into the story being played out.

The site is called The Next Incantation and if you have any interest in role play I would love to see you there I am playing a character called Mack Wilde there.

The other thing that I have done recently is get back into Anime. Because of my DC binge I had stopped watching anime altogether but started up again over the weekend. I decided to re-watch Fairy Tail starting with the Phantom Lord arc and am currently on the Oración Seis arc. Though I love this show and love Erza and Jellal as a couple for some reason I don’t enjoy the arc’s where Jellal is prominent like this one and the previous Tower of Heaven Arc. Maybe it is because I don’t like seeing Erza vulnerable or her past and Jellal always brings that out in her.

Badger Vs Superman

7aad3nu

So I haven’t really completed my binge of DC. I am naturally still reading various DC titles in the comics mainly the Rebirth titles but I am also reading the New 52 Justice League Dark and I have the Grayson books as well. I went and saw Suicide Squad which I did a review for and I also got a Harley inspired tattoo. I finished Justice League Unlimited and am have started to watch Batman Beyond season 2 and also Superman the animated series as well.

I think I might have mentioned it somewhere is a previous post that I have a bit of an issue with Superman which is kinda funny because the other superhero that I have I an issue with also starts with an S and ends with a man. I mean I don’t have this issue with Supergirl at all and there is little difference between the two, power wise. With this watch of the animated series I am trying to find at the very least an affection for the character.

Maybe a little history of my interactions with the Man of Steel. I do remember seeing the Christopher Reeve movies when I was younger and they were alright. The next time he popped up on my radar was the Adventures of Lois and Clark and I remember watching the show and looking forward to it to an extent but that was more because Dean Cain is/was really good looking and I was a teenage girl who had a bit of a crush. I never watched Smallville but my boyfriend keeps on urging  me to watch it as he is a big fan of the show. I never saw the Brandan Routh Superman movie.

I have seen all the DC cartoon movies that he has appeared in as well as Young Justice, Justice League Unlimited and that completely horrible Superman/Shazam: Return of Black Adam short. I have also seen Man of Steel which I don’t have any issues with on its own as many people do. But as I still have no affection for him at all.

It can’t be his powers or background/story because as I said earlier that Supergirl has the same powers and comes from a similar situation as him. Or should say that I can’t use it as an excuse because I do have a little bit of an issue with the powers thing but for some reason it doesn’t bother me so much with her as it does with him. Maybe the little feminist is coming out of me. I mean if you think about men are already faster and stronger than women so on that score all the yellow sun did was make him more stronger and faster than the average man. But he can fly, shoot heat beams out of his eyes, blow super cold air and see through walls that aren’t lined with lead. If he wasn’t raised by Jonathon and Martha Kent he might of ended up a pervert with super powers. He could have ended up the alien that ripped off the roof of the White House.

Maybe it is his personality a bit as to me as Clark Kent he is not that interesting and even the Superman persona is a little  boring for my liking. He is not gritty enough I think and that is why I have a preference for Batman and even Bruce Wayne is quite an interesting person. Personality wise I don’t have the same issue with Supergirl but then I really only know her from the TV show and little from Justice League Unlimited but I am going off the TV version more because I like that version more because of the goofy/geeky girl is probably more like me and she reminds me of Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen/The Flash and that is probably my favourite show at the moment. I have to admit though their costuming/secret identity is a bit weak as well. It surprises me that no-one worked it out sooner.

I know he is a hero and a super one at that but the fact that he tends to drop everything to save Lois Lane is a little annoying and kind of angers me. Lois is a strong, smart, stubborn and capable woman and I know that she tends to get herself into more trouble than most women do because of these qualities but I would also like to think that because of these qualities she could probably find a way out of the situations she gets into, unless it involves falling from ten or more story buildings without a parachute. I mean she probably did before Superman showed up in Metropolis but he does not really give the opportunity too and just swoops in to save her.  He has a saving people complex like Harry Potter (see I worked him in) but only for Lois Lane.

My comic knowledge of him is only really through the Rebirth titles and he is not coming across very interesting in any form at the moment. The New Superman, the one set in China, from the get go I didn’t really like because he comes across as a bit of an arrogant bully with a chip on his shoulder and the regular Superman in Superman and Action Comics is just too confusing.

Maybe if I keep plugging on he might just become interesting.

Badger On A DC Binge

I guess it is not a binge in the traditional sense but whenever I have time these days I am usually reading or watching something DC related. The only times that I have not done this have been when I decided to rewatch what I have of the Magicians (see my review of the show so far) and when I went over to the “dark side” and watched Deadpool with my bf and also read one of the comics. To be honest I didn’t find the comic all that smart or funny like many people have said they are and to me he just came off as insane.

Well any who back to my binge.

I think what has started this binge is the most recent DC reboot which is being called Rebirth. First off I am not the biggest comic book reader and though I do own a few selected titles (Flashpoint Paradox and a few of the Kevin Smith titles) I had never read a whole arc, if we can call it that, from start to finish.  I have read everything within in the Rebirth titles and especially enjoyed The Flash titles, Titans, Aquaman and Green Arrow.

This had bled out a little and I am now reading the Darkest Night titles, a Nightwing title and Cyborg because there is just something about Cyborg that I like. I have also finished reading Killing Joke because of the movie being release in August.

On the video side of things I have watched the following:

  • The first season of Young Justice
  • Half way through the Justice League Unlimited
  • Working my way through the Batman: Brave and the Bold and Green Lantern the animated series
  • Green Lantern: First Flight (animated movie)
  • Green Lantern: Emerald Nights (animated movie)
  • Wonder Woman (animated movie)
  • Batman: Under the Red Hood (animated movie)
  • Justice League: Throne of Atlantis (animated movie)
  • Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox (animated movie)
  • Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths (animated movie)
  • JLA: Trapped in Time (animated movie)
  • Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (animated movie)
  • Superman/Shazam: The Return of Black Adam (animated movie)

I also started to watch The Dark Night Returns (animated movie) last night but my internet dropped and I couldn’t get it back so I am hoping to finish watching it tonight. As you can see I have not watched any live action but I do own all of Chris Nolan movies and I am planning on buying a digital version of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice tonight.
